Youth Apprenticeships

siw youth Apprenticeship

SIW’s Youth Apprenticeship is a 3-year work-based learning program that starts during a student’s junior year in high school. It creates a talent pipeline that meets employer demand now and in the future. Youth Apprenticeship includes five components that distinguish it from an internship, pre-apprenticeship, or other work-based learning experience. The components are:

  • Two or more semesters of related academic instruction
  • Paid employment with at least 650 hours of on-the-job learning
  • College credit and industry credentials related to the field of study

The initial focus for SIW is the healthcare sector, with the apprentices participating in CNA programs and rotating through 10 departments at the hospital during their junior year. Before their senior year, the apprentices one of the following specific career pathways: Practical Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging/MRI Technician, Surgical Technician, Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technician, and Hospital Engineering/Maintenance.

SIW has also been selected as a regional INCAP Connector for the new Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway (INCAP) program. INCAP is a statewide effort to scale Youth Apprenticeships through consistent occupational pathways with Industry Talent Associations (ITAs) in six sectors: health care, banking, construction, manufacturing, & logistics, IT and life sciences. SIW will implement INCAP apprenticeships in our six counties, beginning with the banking and healthcare sectors for the 2026-2027 school year.  More information on INCAP is available at https://indianacap.org/
